Peculiarly Purple
I want to be a purple pony,
I have no reason why,
I didnβt have this dream until
I saw a neighborβs horse close by.
Thereβs a statuesque horse in that corral,
Always still, its down the road on the right,
The owner called it, βthat old thing.β
But to me it was an inspiring sight!
God didnβt make ponies purple.
No reason I can see.
Purple birds and berries,
butterflies too,
And some purplish bees.
Is purple saved for special things?
Like shells and frogs and fruit?
Or is it just that no one asked
For a mammal in that hue?
I think I know a way
This new dream can come true!
Iβll eat a lot of blackberries
And then Iβll start turning blue!
From blue to purple, isnβt that hard.
Just more purplish fruit for me,
If I eat a ton of them,
Can more purple in me you see?
It might be silly. It might be lame.
But this, I must believe.
βWith God, all things are possible.β
Ask with open hands, ready to receive!
You see, God is creative.
To be Creator, He must be!
But for some reason, He forgot
To make purple-hued ponies.
Maybe He didnβt forget at all.
Itβs very clear to me.
That once I asked this special request,
He quickly noted my plea.
I thought He might not answer.
I thought He might forget,
But in His time and will I sought,
Still the answer came - βnot yet.β
I tried to do it on my own.
To make my dream come true.
βIβlll eat a lot of blackberries
And then Iβll start turning blue!β
From blue to purple, I planned it out,
Iβll just eat more each day.
But, no one saw a difference.
βYouβre crazy!β Is all theyβd say.
God didnβt laugh; He didnβt mumble.
He was waiting just to see.
How dearly did I want it?
How important was purple to me?
I drew a lot of ponies,
And colored them purple too.
Then trotted and galloped as practice.
To show my intent was true!
I wrote about purple ponies.
I made them all rhyme.
And then, one day, God seemed to say,
βOh, good! Now, itβs time!β
One nice day, but not so special
As I began to start my day,
I startled! I was purple!
He did it His very own way!
I am a purple pony.
Itβs Godβs answer directly to me.
He truly heard and really considered
My very peculiar plea!
βSo odd,β God thought to want to be purple.
βI donβt have any real ones around,
but this child of mine desires to be
Like one on a merry-go-round.β
So God made me a purple pony,
Peculiar as that might be.
I think He just might save βpurpleβ
For very special pleas.
I am a purple pony.
Thatβs now pretty clear to see!
Some say Iβm peculiar.
But this is me, just being me!
I am a purple pony
My diet just isnβt hay.
Itβs blueberries and blackberries,
And anything purple that comes my way!
Itβs fun being purple,
The children come to see!
I especially love giving pony rides,
βUnder age 100, itβs totally free!β
Iβm really just a normal pony.
My color is really true.
Itβs because I asked God to be purple,
So He made me purple, through and through!
The lesson here is simply that
God knows me best, you see.
For me to be a purple pony
Is just Him loving the real me!
Yes! Childlike and Free!
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing,
so that you by the power of the Holy Spirit,
you may about in hope!

2013: God gave me this little poem on a Solitude retreat. It expresses a God-given, unidentified, and unimaginable dream within each of us. Itβs not something I can achieve alone with my own plans and fortitude. Iβm on a journey of faith with Him in becoming all He created me to be as His child with the freedom to grow, explore, and dream.
